Backing-free embroidery (also known as no-backing embroidery, backing-free stitching, or all-thread 3D embroidery) is a flexible embroidery solution independently developed and implemented by Dobest for close-fitting knits and high-stretch fabrics. In this design, on a dark gray knit sweatshirt base fabric, the paper backing and adhesive film conventionally required for embroidery are dispensed with entirely; instead, specialized electronic tension compensation and an internal all-thread cross framework shape silver-gray high-strength embroidery thread into chevron 3D woven-texture lettering, accented by fine red-and-white wavy flat embroidery at the upper right. The front lettering is crisp and dimensional and resists wrinkling and distortion, while the reverse side shows smooth, soft threads, avoiding the skin irritation and scratching caused by incomplete removal of conventional paper backing.
Optional techniques
Available options include all-thread 3D relief backing-free embroidery, chevron weave-stitch backing-free embroidery, and multi-color dense flat embroidery in backing-free combinations; machine tension parameters can be calibrated individually based on fabric weight and two-way/four-way stretch ratings, and clean finished garments can also be embroidered directly on the machine.
Applications
Suitable for chest logos, sleeve logos, and main visual customization on premium close-fitting T-shirts, heavyweight hooded sweatshirts, activewear and yoga wear, infant and children's wear, loungewear, and accessible-luxury casual knitwear pieces.
Customization process
The customer provides vector artwork and sends actual bulk fabric (or clean finished garments) → Dobest engineers measure fabric stretch and shrinkage and determine the digitizing and sampling plan → standard quick sampling in 24–48 hours (3–4 business days for complex combined techniques; three simple samples free of charge; complex sampling fees can be credited against the order when the MOQ of 300 pieces is reached) → after the customer confirms front and back hand feel and the sealed sample, bulk production is typically delivered in 5–10 business days, with an MOQ of 300 pieces.
Production capacity
Dobest is located in Humen, Dongguan, and has a 3,000 sqm standardized factory and more than 30 specialized computerized embroidery machines retrofitted with mechanical and electronic controls. With backing-free embroidery, garments come off the machine ready as finished pieces, saving the conventional manual backing-tearing, washing to remove backing, and high-temperature pressing steps, helping prevent the risk of washing shrinkage and high-temperature press marks at the source; bulk lead times and quality control remain highly consistent.
